SAN PIETROBURGO – MONTECATINI OPERA FESTIVAL

In the intercultural relationships between Italy and Russia art and particularly music has always represented a strong link (trait-d’union) between these two countries, which have a lot in common though very distant geographically. Both of them have a great number of extraordinary works of art thanks to the many highly gifted artists who have lived there.. Both of them can boast great music schools and brilliant musicians in addition to artistic masterpieces.
Russia has some of the oldest famous theatres, often realized by Italian architects, who for long used to go to Russia to share their creativity and their skills. St. Petersburg itself, considered the pearl of the world culture, shows many examples of artistic Italian influence.
Think just of the amazing baroque and neoclassic buildings, whose projects were made by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, Giacomo Quarenghi and Carlo Rossi for the Emperess Elisabeth 1st, Catherine 2nd and the Emperor Alexander 1st. Absolutely great was the role of the Italian composers who created the opera in Russia at the court of Catherine the great and of her successors. Less known probably is the story of the Russian singers who found in Italy not only their home but also fame and success. Among these singers it is worth mentioning Nicola Ivanoff, much appreciated by Rossini, who convinced Verdi to compose two arias just for him. One in Attila and the other in Ernani.
Montecatini Terme, the exclusive renowned European SPA.” La ville d’eaux” with many attractive valuable buildings of Decadentism, art decò but also neo baroque , was one of the favourite meeting places of composers like Verdi, Rossini, Puccini and musicians like Toscanini, Caruso. Actually many other artists, conductors, librettists, men of letters liked staying in Montecatini Terme for a period of rest, relaxation and study. Since the 19th century Montecatini Terme has been extremely important for the European “èlite” interested in musical culture and still is a place where art gives special emotions.

OPERA & FOOD/SHENZEN

LA BOHEME

La Bohème is an opera in four acts, composed by Giacomo Puccini between 1893 and 1895 to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on “Scènes de la vie de bohème” (1851) by Henri Murger. It’s an easy opera to love, a tragic love story set in the bohemian neighborhoods of Paris around 1830. The opera follows the lives of a group of struggling artists and their pursuit of love and happiness. The world premiere of La Bohème was in Turin on 1 February 1896 at the Teatro Regio conducted by the 28-year-old Arturo Toscanini. Three of the ten most performed operas in the world today are by Puccini, equaled only by Mozart.

ONEGIN/TRAVIATA

ST.PETERSBURG NORTHERN SINFONIETTA

The last event of “St. Petersburg-Montecatini Opera Festival” provides for, once again, famous Italian artists by the side of Russian stars direct from the most famous theatres such as Mariinski of St.Petersburg and Bolshoj in Moscow, accompanied by St. Petersburg Northern Sinfonietta directed by Fabio Mastrangelo.
The event will be opened by the “most Russian” composer: Piotr Jlic Tchaikovsky, that celebrates his 175th anniversary of birth. The program provide for a selection from Evgeny Onegin, excerpted from the homonym novel of Alexander Puskin.
This is what Tchajkovskij wrote to his colleague Sergei Taneyev: “ If has ever been composed a music with sincere passion, with love for the story and characters, is for sue the one composed for the Onegin. I used to melting and trembling in an inexpressible pleasure while I was writing it. If the audience could feel just a little bit of what I felt while I was composing this opera, I will feel content and satisfied.”
In the second part of the event there is an undisputed masterpiece by one of the most famous Italian operatic composer: La Traviata, an intense drama in which Giuseppe Verdi delineates one of the most modern and at the same time the most psychologically complex female character of the romantic opera production, showing his deep sensibility and his ability to understand and anticipate the times.

GALA VIENNESE

An elegant show, fascinating and festive at the same time.
The G.Sanin Straussensemble with the soprano Cristina Baggio, will drive us to a nostalgic journey to the past through the most famous melodies from Imperial Vienna, from elegant and sophisticated music of the Viennese Waltzes of Strauss dynasty, symbols of an Epoque that, starting from XIX century, have enchanted the world and filled hearts of romanticism and passion, to the light charm of Operetta, an extraordinary and fresh genre, ready to be heard, where the musical and vocal commitment is less significant, but not for that secondary.
