MONTECATINI-RUSSIA OPERA FESTIVAL

From TCHAIKOVSKY to PUCCINI

A supporter of dialogue between cultures, “Il Parnaso” Cultural Association has identified in art, especially music, a strong trait - d'union that has always linked Italy and Russia, countries geographically distant but with many points of contact. Both are territories rich in extraordinary works and exceptional talents. Both can boast great music schools and great performers as well as offering beautiful historical evidence and artistic masterpieces.
Russia is home to some of the oldest and most prestigious theatres, often the result of the design of Italian architects, who for centuries came there to share their work and creativity.

LA TRAVIATA

Giuseppe Verdi

‘La Traviata’ is one of Giuseppe Verdi’s most popular works. The opera tells the tragic love story between courtesan Violetta Valéry and romantic Alfredo Germont. During the premiere of “La Traviata” on 6 May 1853 at La Fenice opera house the audience booed and jeered throughout most of the performance. The next day, Verdi wrote to his friend Emanuele Muzio, in perhaps his most famous letter, “La Traviata, last night a failure. Was the fault mine or the singers’? Time will tell.” Verdi made a few revisions to the score, between 1853 and 1854, and the revised version was a great success. “La Traviata” is currently the most performed opera in the world.
